Getting a US virtual phone number for your business
A US number with a local area code, 212 for New York, 415 for San Francisco or 305 for Miami, shows your prospects a domestic call rather than a call from abroad. That is often what convinces a US decision-maker to pick up.
Good news for a company based outside the US: it is the simplest country on the list. No supporting document is required to get a local number, and no US address is requested. You do not need to set up a US subsidiary.
The country does not separate landline and mobile numbers: the same 10-digit format is used for everything. A local number therefore lets you call both landlines and cell phones.
Country code and number format
- Local (landline)
- +1 +1, then 10 digits: a 3-digit area code and a 7-digit number. Example: +1 212 555 0142.
- Mobile Not available
- +1 No separate mobile range: all US numbers follow the same 10-digit format.
What you need to know
Pick your prospects’ area code
The US has several hundred area codes. Choose the one for the city or state where most of your prospects are: 212 or 646 in New York, 312 in Chicago, 213 in Los Angeles, 617 in Boston.
Identified calls
US carriers verify the caller’s identity through the STIR/SHAKEN framework. A properly identified call is less likely to be flagged as spam.
Calling hours
Telemarketing calls are regulated by the federal TCPA. Our “When to call your prospects” tool shows the local time of each number and the hours to respect.
