Getting a UK virtual phone number for your business
London remains Europe’s leading business hub, and a 020 number opens doors there. The UK has one particularity: no supporting document has to be uploaded, for either a landline or a mobile number. The details requested about the company and the person responsible are, however, thorough.
The real difference between landline and mobile is the address. For a landline, the company must declare a valid UK address. For a mobile, the address can be anywhere in the world: a company based outside the UK can therefore get a UK mobile number without a London office.
The declared responsible person must be a company director in charge of phone numbers. You will be asked for their personal mobile number, on which they can be reached, and which cannot itself be a virtual number.
Country code and number format
- Local (landline)
- +44 +44, then usually 10 digits. Landlines start with 1 or 2 after the country code: 20 London, 161 Manchester, 121 Birmingham, 131 Edinburgh. Example: +44 20 7946 0123.
- Mobile
- +44 +44 7, then 9 digits (07 nationally). Example: +44 7700 900123.
What you need to know
The register: Companies House or equivalent
You will be asked for the body that registered the company and its registration number: Companies House for a UK company, or the national business register for a company registered elsewhere (for example the trade and companies register, RCS, in France).
Silent calls are penalised
The UK regulator Ofcom can penalise silent or abandoned calls, typical of auto-dialers set up with too few agents, under its powers against “persistent misuse” of networks. The fine can reach £2 million.
Mobile or landline?
Without a UK address, mobile is the only option. With a local office, a 020 or 0161 landline clearly shows your local presence.
