Getting a Canadian virtual phone number for your business

Canada is a natural market for companies that sell in English or French: a 416 or 647 number makes your calls look like they come from Toronto, a 514 or 438 from Montreal. Your prospects see a number they recognise, not a foreign country code.

As in the US, no supporting document is required to get a Canadian local number, and no Canadian address is requested. A company based outside Canada can get one without a local establishment.

Canada shares the US numbering plan: no distinction between landlines and mobiles, the same 10-digit format for everyone. A local number therefore also calls cell phones.

Country code and number format

Local (landline)
+1 +1, then 10 digits: a 3-digit area code and a 7-digit number. Example: +1 514 555 0142.
Mobile Not available
+1 No separate mobile range: all Canadian numbers follow the same 10-digit format.

What you need to know

The right area codes

514 and 438 in Montreal, 418 and 581 in Quebec City, 819 in Outaouais and Eastern Townships, 416 and 647 in Toronto, 604 in Vancouver, 403 in Calgary. In Quebec, a local area code and a call in French make the difference.

CRTC rules

Telemarketing calls to businesses are not subject to the National Do Not Call List (DNCL) rules. The CRTC’s telemarketing rules, however, apply to everyone: identify yourself, keep your own internal do-not-call list and respect calling hours, 9 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at weekends.

One number, two countries?

Canada and the US share the +1 country code, but each area code belongs to a single country. To target both markets, plan one number in each.
