Getting a German virtual phone number for your business

Europe’s largest market, Germany is best prospected with a German number: a call from a foreign country code is rarely returned. German landline and mobile numbers are reserved for businesses, which suits B2B prospecting well.

The address is the central condition. It must be in Germany, within the area code’s zone for a landline, and above all match exactly the one shown on the registration document. A difference in spelling between your extract and the declared address is enough to block the application.

Three documents are accepted to prove the company exists: the commercial register extract (Handelsregisterauszug), the business registration (Gewerbeanmeldung) or, for liberal professions, the Finanzamt letter confirming the tax number.

Country code and number format

Local (landline)
+49 +49, then the city code without the 0 and the number; the length varies by city. 30 Berlin, 89 Munich, 40 Hamburg, 69 Frankfurt, 221 Cologne. Example: +49 30 1234567.
Mobile
+49 +49 15, 16 or 17, then 8 to 9 digits (015x, 016x or 017x nationally). Example: +49 157 12345678.

What you need to know

B2B prospecting regulated by the UWG

Section 7 of the German Act against Unfair Competition (UWG) classes as an unacceptable nuisance any advertising call made to a business without its at least presumed consent. For a consumer, express consent is required.

Amended Gewerbeanmeldung?

If the original business registration has since been amended, you must provide the latest version (Gewerbeummeldung).

Numbers of variable length

A Berlin number and a number from a small town do not have the same number of digits: that is normal, city codes range from 2 to 5 digits.
