Getting a French virtual phone number for your business
For a company registered in France, getting a French number is a formality: the documents requested are the ones you already give your bank. The Kbis extract, the official certificate from the French trade and companies register (RCS), does most of the work, since it proves the company exists, its address and the name of its legal representative.
The key point is the address: it must be in France, for a landline as for a mobile. A foreign company with no establishment in France therefore does not meet this condition. Conversely, the address does not have to match the region of the area code: a company based in Lyon can request a number starting with 01.
The application also includes a few details to enter: the RCS or SIREN number, the company website, and the name and email address of the legal representative.
Country code and number format
- Local (landline)
- +33 +33, then 9 digits. Nationally, the number starts with 01 to 05 depending on the region: 01 Île-de-France, 02 North-West, 03 North-East, 04 South-East, 05 South-West. Example: +33 1 23 45 67 89.
- Mobile
- +33 +33 6 or +33 7, then 8 digits (06 or 07 nationally). Example: +33 6 12 34 56 78.
What you need to know
Mobile numbers are for person-to-person calls
A number starting with 06 or 07 is intended for a person calling one contact at a time. It must not be used for automated calls.
Ranges dedicated to automated canvassing
Arcep, the French telecoms regulator, reserves specific number ranges for canvassing calls made by automated systems.
The area code is still a sign of proximity
Even though the address can be anywhere in France, a 04 number for contacts around Lyon or a 05 for Bordeaux and Toulouse inspires more trust than a number unrelated to their region.
