Can Grok make phone calls? For businesses, yes, today: xAI sells a voice API and a no-code agent builder that both run on real phone lines at $0.08 a minute. For consumers, Elon Musk announced on October 25, 2026 that Grok Bot can call people and businesses on your behalf, but that feature is not documented yet.
Grok and phone calls is a fast-moving topic, and most of what circulates mixes launch-day numbers with rumors. This guide sorts it out: the three products, who each one is for, what it costs, what actually works, and the rules that apply when an AI is the one talking. Every section links to a deeper article in the series.
What are the three ways Grok handles phone calls?
Grok is the AI assistant built by xAI. The corporate map has moved fast: xAI acquired X in March 2025, then SpaceX acquired xAI on February 2, 2026. That matters for phone calls, because one parent company now owns both a voice (Grok) and a network (Starlink), a story we unpack in Elon Musk’s phone play.
On the phone, Grok comes in three layers, each for a different audience.
| Grok Bot | Voice Agent API | Voice Agent Builder | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Built for | Consumers, solo professionals | Developers, software vendors | Small businesses without engineers |
| What it does | Places a call for you and sends a summary | Provides the voice for an agent you code | Turns a written brief into an agent on a number |
| Call direction | Outbound | Inbound or outbound, your choice | Mostly inbound (front desk, booking) |
| Price | Included in X Premium, Super, Ultra | $0.08 per minute | $0.08 per minute, no platform fee |
| Status | Beta; calling announced Oct 25, 2026 | Available since December 2025 | Beta since July 2026 |
Which Grok phone product fits you?
Most readers only need one of the three. Start from your situation, not from the product names.

What actually works today, and what is only announced?
Live. The Voice Agent API since December 17, 2025, with an official example that connects a Twilio number to a Grok agent. The Voice Agent Builder, in beta since July 1, 2026, with one free number per account, voice cloning from about two minutes of audio, recording and transcription of every call, and transfer to a human. Grok Bot itself, in beta since August 11, 2026 on desktop, iPhone and Android.
Announced. Grok Bot phone calls. On October 25, 2026, Elon Musk wrote on X that Grok Bot “can now call someone or a business for you, make a request on your behalf, take notes on the response and send you a note summarizing the conversation.” The feature is not in xAI’s documentation yet, and our Grok Bot fact check separates what is confirmed from what is not.

How does Grok sound natural on a phone line?
Older voice bots chained three programs: one to turn speech into text, one to write a reply, one to read it aloud. Each step added a pause. LiveKit describes Grok’s real-time model as a single “voice-to-voice” model: audio goes in and audio comes out, which is how it gets under a second and lets callers interrupt naturally.
The phone network adds its own limit. A standard line carries 8 kHz μ-law audio, the format North American phone networks have used for decades, and it strips out much of a voice’s richness. xAI’s official phone example keeps that format end to end to avoid conversions. The plain-English version is in how Grok talks on the phone, and the plumbing in how to connect Grok to a real phone number.
What do US rules say about AI phone calls?
An AI on the phone is still a phone call, so the usual rules apply, plus a few that were written with AI in mind.

Where is this heading?
The scenario taking shape is odd but logical: your AI assistant calls a company’s AI front desk, and two machines book an appointment while no human listens. Google is testing calls on your behalf with Call for Me on the Pixel 11, and OpenAI has let developers connect agents to phone lines over SIP since August 2025. We explore that future, and what breaks, in when AI calls AI.

The bottom line
Grok already works on the phone for businesses, through a developer API and a no-code Builder, both at $0.08 a minute. For consumers, Grok Bot promises to make calls for you, but that feature is announced rather than documented. The voice engine answers in under a second, which is what makes a call feel natural, while processing runs in the United States and the TCPA treats AI voices like any other artificial voice. The sensible move for a business is to test AI where it shines, answering and booking, and keep people on the calls that sell. Each point is covered in depth in the ten articles above.
