Key points

  • PhoneBurner is an American company founded in 2008 in Laguna Beach, California. It claims more than 3,000 customers and over 750 million calls placed from its platform.
  • Its official FAQ states that the service can only dial numbers located in the United States and Canada. A team prospecting in France cannot use it to call its prospects.
  • Its dialler handles one number at a time. No plan offers parallel dialling, and the vendor stands by that choice in the name of conversation quality.
  • Pricing is public and easy to read: $140, $165 and $183 per licence per month on annual billing, with no licence minimum and no commitment.
  • One-click voicemail drop is included on every plan. It is the feature the vendor promotes most, and the one whose real value is measured least often.

The 8 solutions at a glance

Eight diallers, two ways of dialling and two markets that do not overlap. Telling them apart avoids comparing a tool that cannot call France with one that calls nothing else.

The horizontal axis separates diallers that handle one number at a time, such as PhoneBurner, from those that open several lines at once. The vertical axis separates vendors that dial the North American market from those that dial French and European numbers.

The lower right quadrant is the only one that concerns a French team that wants both to dial its own numbers and to open several lines. Skipcall, Flunter and Minari sit there. Skipcall adds the rest of the phone system: colleagues who only need one line (management, admin, customer service) are equipped for €15 per month, with no second contract and no second directory.

Who PhoneBurner is

PhoneBurner is an American publisher of a dialler for sales teams, founded in 2008 by brothers John and Paul Rydell and based in Laguna Beach, California. It is one of the oldest power dialler vendors still active: it claims more than 3,000 customers and over 750 million calls placed from its platform. This is not a fragile vendor, it is an established one, on a market that is not yours if you prospect in France.

What users say

PhoneBurner earns excellent scores where reviews are plentiful, and a low score where they can be counted on one hand. The gap says nothing about the product, and everything about sample size.

G2over 275 reviews
4.7/ 5

It is one of the best rated diallers in its category. Ease of use, support quality and the time saved on voicemails come up constantly in positive reviews.

Trustpilotonly 7 reviews
2.7/ 5

Seven published reviews: the average carries no statistical value and should not be read as a score. It only tells us that the few customers who came to this platform raised billing and support grievances. That is why we report the Capterra distribution below, on a far larger sample.

Distribution of the 176 Capterra reviews

Checked on 3 September 2026

5 ★84%
4 ★11%
3 ★4%
2 ★0%
1 ★1%

On Capterra, the overall score reaches 4.8 out of 5, with 4.7 for ease of use and 4.7 for customer service. The distribution is clear: 84% five star reviews and 1% one star reviews. Almost every reservation is about the price per licence, rarely about the product itself.

The price per licence

This is the most frequent grievance on Capterra: $140 per licence per month on annual billing, for a dialler that handles one number at a time, sets a high entry ticket. Several reviews also mention successive price rises.

The absence of parallel dialling

The request comes up in G2 reviews: users who scale their volume ask for a multi-line dialler that PhoneBurner does not offer. The vendor stands by that choice, and points to the absence of a silent gap on pick-up and of abandoned calls.

The contact name before the call

Capterra reviews report that the contact name does not appear early enough in the interface, which gets in the way of opening the conversation. A detail of ergonomics, but one that weighs when you make calls all day.

Geographic coverage

This is not a product flaw but a market boundary: the PhoneBurner FAQ states that the service only dials American and Canadian numbers. For a team calling in France, the question of choice does not arise.

The numbers PhoneBurner can call

This is the point most comparison pages leave out, and the only one that settles the question for a French team. Before comparing features, check that the tool dials your numbers.

PhoneBurner

United States and Canada

The official FAQ is explicit: the service can be used from anywhere, but it only dials numbers located in the United States and Canada. PhoneBurner says it is looking at opening up internationally, without announcing a date. No French number can therefore be called from the platform.

Skipcall

France, hosted by Scaleway

Hosting is handled by a French cloud provider, which places processing under the GDPR and European law with no transfer to a third country. French numbers can be dialled and recordings stay in France.

The real cost of entry

PhoneBurner publishes its prices, imposes neither a licence minimum nor a commitment, and does not bill by the minute. On that ground, its price list is among the clearest on the market. What you actually pay depends on the plan, because call transcription and SMS are only available at the top level.

The gap in price per licence is clear, but it only matters if the comparison makes sense: PhoneBurner does not dial French numbers. The absence of answering machine detection is a deliberate design choice on its side, meant to remove the silent gap at pick-up.

The last row reads both ways: voicemail drop is a PhoneBurner feature that Skipcall does not offer. If your sequence relies on it, that counts in PhoneBurner's favour. The next section explains why the feature deserves to be measured before it is bought.

Voicemail in prospecting: should you leave a message?

One-click voicemail drop is PhoneBurner's flagship feature, present on every plan: the rep records messages in advance, clicks when they reach a voicemail, and moves on to the next contact while the message is left. The vendor claims 30 to 60 seconds saved every time. That leaves the question nobody deals with: does the message produce anything? Here are the four cases to tell apart, and the trap in each of them.

1When to leave a messageKeep the message for calls where it carries information
  • Wait for the second or third attempt, once your number has already shown up as a missed call
  • Name the precise reason for the call and one useful piece of information, rather than introducing your company
  • Announce the next contact and honour it: an email the same day, a call back on the date you gave

The trap.Leaving a message on the very first attempt. The person discovers your name through a recording instead of a conversation, and calling back becomes an effort they have no reason to make.

2When to hold backStop the message from becoming a cold sales signal
  • Do not leave the same recording several times on the same contact: identical repetition is noticed immediately
  • Rule out ringless drops, which leave a message when the phone never rang
  • Watch for caller numbers flagged as spam and pull them out of the rotation before they penalise the whole team

The trap.Confusing a one-click drop, where your rep genuinely called and waited for the voicemail, with a ringless drop. In France the second falls under a different legal regime, set out below.

3How to measure itFind out whether the message produces anything beyond an impression
  • Build a control group: on the same list and in the same week, half of the contacts you fail to reach get a message and the other half do not
  • Count inbound callbacks and written replies in the seventy-two hours after the drop, not the number of messages left
  • Compare the connect rate of later attempts between the two groups, to measure the effect of the message on the rest of the sequence

The trap.Reusing vendor figures. On its voicemail drop page, PhoneBurner claims for instance that 87% of sales calls do not reach a live answer, without giving a source or a method. A figure with no method does not transfer to your list.

4The legal frameworkStay within the rules that apply in France
  • Check the legal basis for the call first: since 11 August 2026, calling a consumer in France requires their prior consent, while business prospecting rests on legitimate interest when the approach relates to the profession of the person
  • Tell people that their number is used for prospecting and give them a simple and free way to object, as the CNIL requires
  • Document how recordings are kept: the CNIL states that recordings can be neither permanent nor systematic, and requires an archiving and deletion policy

The trap.Treating an automated message drop as an ordinary call. Prospecting by automated calling system is prohibited without the prior consent of the person, under article L34-5 of the French postal and electronic communications code.

Record it once, reuse it everywhere

The 5 rules of a voicemail that gets a callback

They hold whatever the tool: a pre-recorded message is reused hundreds of times, which justifies spending an hour on it rather than three minutes.

  1. 01Give your name and your company in the first five seconds, then your number at the end, articulated and repeated once
  2. 02One reason to call, phrased from the point of view of the person you are calling, never a description of your offer
  3. 03Thirty seconds at most: beyond that, nothing guarantees your number is heard, since it comes at the end of the message
  4. 04Announce the next action and carry it out: an email sent straight away links a voice to something written the person can read
  5. 05Open the exit door explicitly by saying how to ask you to stop calling, which the CNIL expects of any prospecting

What to check before switching

01
The end date of the period you have already paid for

PhoneBurner bills monthly with no commitment, which makes leaving simple: there is no notice period and no renewal to negotiate. The only point to note is the date on which the period already paid for ends, so you do not pay for a month you will not use.

02
Exporting your recordings and voicemails

Call recordings, pre-recorded voicemails, logs and dispositions: ask for the export while the account is still active. Your voicemail scripts often represent several months of iteration, and nothing rebuilds them.

03
Your American numbers do not port to France

Portability applies within a single country: an American or Canadian number does not transfer to a French carrier. If you open a European market, you open new numbers, you do not move the old ones.

04
The real scope of your CRM integration

List what reaches your CRM today, field by field, including call dispositions and voicemail drop records, then check that the equivalent will exist tomorrow. That is where the gaps hide, more than in the calling features themselves.

What do you actually need?

Three situations, three families of tool. Most bad choices come from a comparison page in which the question of the market being called never appears.

Who are you calling?
Prospecting in France and EuropeFrench diallerSkipcall · Flunter · Minari
Prospecting in the United StatesNorth American power diallerPhoneBurner · Kixie · JustCall
Large teams, maximum volumeEnterprise parallel diallerOrum · Nooks · Salesfinity

PhoneBurner belongs to the second family. Asking it to dial a French number means asking a North American vendor for a service it has never opened, and that it says itself it does not offer.

Who each solution is for

PhoneBurner is still the right choice if

  • your prospects are in the United States or Canada, the only two countries it can dial
  • you prefer a single-line dialler, with no silent gap on pick-up and no abandoned calls
  • you want public pricing, billed monthly, with no commitment and no licence minimum

An alternative makes sense if

  • you call in France or in Europe: PhoneBurner does not dial those numbers
  • the time spent on voicemails and dead numbers becomes the limiting factor
  • hosting your data in Europe is a requirement from your legal department
  • you want billing in euros and support in your own time zone

Frequently asked questions

What is the best PhoneBurner alternative in 2026?+

There is no single answer, but one criterion settles the question straight away for a French team: PhoneBurner only dials American and Canadian numbers. If you call in France, an alternative is not a preference, it is a necessity. Among French diallers, Skipcall, Flunter and Minari all offer parallel dialling. On the American side, Kixie and JustCall cover a scope close to PhoneBurner, while Orum, Nooks and Salesfinity position themselves on parallel dialling for large teams.

Does PhoneBurner work in France?+

No, not for calling French prospects. The official PhoneBurner FAQ states that the service can be used from any country, but that it only dials numbers located in the United States and Canada. The vendor says it is looking at opening up to other countries, without announcing a timeline. A team based in France can therefore use PhoneBurner to prospect the North American market, but not its home market.

How much does PhoneBurner cost?+

Pricing is public. On annual billing: $140 per licence per month for the Standard plan, $165 for Professional and $183 for Premium. On monthly billing, those amounts rise to $165, $195 and $215 respectively. There is no licence minimum and no commitment, and calls are unlimited with no per-minute billing. Call transcription, AI note taking and SMS messaging are only available from the Premium plan up, with SMS billed at $15 per 1,000 outbound messages beyond the included volume.

Does PhoneBurner offer a parallel dialler?+

No. PhoneBurner is a single-line power dialler: it dials numbers one after another and the rep is on the line at every pick-up. The vendor stands by that choice, and points to the absence of a silent gap at pick-up and the absence of abandoned calls, two side effects of parallel and predictive diallers. No PhoneBurner plan offers parallel dialling, and the request comes up regularly in G2 reviews.

What is PhoneBurner voicemail drop?+

It is the feature the vendor promotes most: the rep records as many messages as they want in advance, then clicks a button when they reach a voicemail. PhoneBurner leaves the message while the rep is already moving on to the next contact. This is not a ringless drop: the call was genuinely placed and the rep was on the line. The vendor claims 30 to 60 seconds saved on every voicemail reached.

Should you leave a voicemail when cold calling?+

It depends on the timing and the content, and above all it can be measured. A message left on the very first attempt makes your name known through a recording rather than a conversation, and gives little reason to call back. A message left after two or three attempts, which names the precise reason for the call and announces the next contact, plays a different role: it prepares the conversation to come rather than replacing it. The only way to settle the question for your own list is to keep a control group that receives no message, then compare inbound callbacks and the connect rate of later attempts.

Is automated voicemail drop legal in France?+

Two situations need to be distinguished under French law. When a rep genuinely calls, reaches a voicemail and leaves a pre-recorded message, the operation follows the rules on telephone prospecting: informing the people concerned, a simple and free right to object, and since 11 August 2026 prior consent to call a consumer. When a message is left without the phone ever ringing, the operation counts as prospecting by automated calling system, which article L34-5 of the French postal and electronic communications code prohibits without the prior consent of the person. The CNIL, the French data protection authority, explicitly classes automated calling systems as electronic prospecting subject to consent.

Does PhoneBurner require a licence minimum or a contract?+

No, and that is one of its strengths. Its FAQ states that no contract is required, that billing is monthly and that the platform works from a single licence up to several hundred. Calls are unlimited, with no per-minute billing. The prices quoted on annual billing do assume you pay for the year: the monthly price is around 18% higher.

Why is PhoneBurner rated 4.7 on G2 and 2.7 on Trustpilot?+

Because the two samples are not comparable. G2 lists over 275 reviews and Capterra 176, with scores of 4.7 and 4.8 out of 5 and a distribution heavily concentrated on five stars. Trustpilot holds only seven, which leaves the average without statistical value. A score calculated on seven reviews does not compare to a score calculated on several hundred, and presenting them side by side without saying so would be dishonest.

What are the French alternatives to PhoneBurner?+

Skipcall, Flunter and Minari are the three main diallers published in France. All three offer parallel dialling, which PhoneBurner does not, and all three dial French numbers. Skipcall adds AI answering machine detection, plus call transcription and call summary included from the first plan, and data hosted with Scaleway, in France.

How do I measure the real effect of a voicemail on my callbacks?+

By building a control group. On the same list and in the same week, half of the contacts you fail to reach get a voicemail and the other half do not. You then count inbound callbacks and written replies within seventy-two hours, and compare the connect rate of later attempts between the two groups. Without that setup, you are measuring your reps activity, not the effect of the message. Vendor figures are no substitute for this measurement: on its voicemail drop page, PhoneBurner claims for instance that 87% of sales calls do not reach a live answer, without giving a source or a method.
