# Send an SMS to a contact

Text your contacts from the SMS module, a contact record, or the dialpad, and keep track of your conversations and unread messages.

Updated on October 27, 2026

The **SMS** menu works like a regular messaging app: conversations on the left, the message thread on the right. Each message shows which teammate wrote it.

## Start a new conversation

1. In the left menu, click **SMS**.
2. Click **New message**.
3. In the **New conversation** window, search for the contact by name, phone number, or company.
4. Click the contact.
5. Type your text in the **Write your message…** field.
6. Click the send button.

Contacts without a phone number are grayed out with the note **no SMS number**, and you can’t select them.

## Other ways to send a text

- **From a contact record**: click the SMS icon next to the phone number.
- **From the dialpad**: type a number, then click the message bubble icon. See [call a number with the dialpad](https://skipcall.io/en/help/dialpad).

## Read and follow your conversations

The list on the left shows each conversation with the contact’s initials and name, the last message, and its date. Use the search field to find a conversation.

In the thread:

- the header shows the contact’s name and number, with shortcuts to their record and to call them;
- each bubble shows the name and avatar of the teammate who sent it, plus the time.

### Show only unread messages

1. Click the filter button (the funnel) next to the search field.
2. Check **Unread**.

## FAQ

### I can’t select a contact to text them

They’re grayed out with **no SMS number**: their record has no usable number. Add one from the record (**Edit**), or run an enrichment to find their phone number. See [enrich your contacts](https://skipcall.io/en/help/enrich-contacts).

### Which number does the text come from?

Normally, from the Skipcall number assigned to you. To check your numbers, open **Settings > My phone numbers**.

### How many texts are included?

Each license includes an SMS quota for the current billing cycle: 100 on the VOIP plan, 200 on STARTER, 500 on INTERMÉDIAIRE, and 1,000 on EXPERT. Beyond that, you can buy SMS credits in **Settings > Credits**. Prices are on the [pricing page](https://skipcall.io/en/pricing), and the **Settings > Credits** screen in the app is the reference.

You can check your usage by hovering over the usage icons in the profile menu, bottom left.

### Does a long message count as several texts?

Normally, yes: a long message is split into several segments, and each segment counts.

### Can I send a text automatically when a prospect doesn’t answer?

Yes, from a sequence, with the **SMS if answering machine** setting. These automatic texts count against your license’s automations counter, not your SMS quota. See [sequence call settings](https://skipcall.io/en/help/sequence-call-settings).
