parallel dialer

Published 5 November 2026

# Is a parallel dialer worth it for 1 to 3 reps? The math, step by step

A founder prospecting solo, or a team of two or three reps: does a multi-line dialer pay off? Real calling hours, conversations per hour, cost per meeting, license price and list size: the full math with every assumption on the table, plus the cases where you're better off without one.

×1.8

more conversations per hour on 4 lines than one call at a time, in our model at a 10% answer rate

$114

per meeting instead of $202 for a rep who dials 40 hours a month, in our scenario

≈ 1,570

contacts used up per rep per month at that pace: the real ceiling for a small team

For a team of 1 to 3 reps, a multi-line dialer pays off from just a few hours of calling a month: in our model, the license pays for itself in under 5 hours of dialing. What really decides it isn’t the price; it’s how many hours you actually spend on the phone and how big a list you can feed it.

Most numbers you’ll find on multi-line dialers are built for teams of 5, 10 or 20 SDRs, at volumes a founder squeezing calls between customer meetings never reaches. This article reruns the math for small teams, step by step, with every assumption on the table. For how the tool itself works, see [what is a parallel dialer](https://skipcall.io/en/blog/what-is-a-parallel-dialer).

## What assumptions does the math use?

A payback calculation is only as good as its assumptions. Here are ours. They’re deliberately simple, and you can swap any of them for your own numbers.

| Assumption | Value used | Where it comes from |
| - | - | - |
| Human answer rate | 10% of numbers dialed | In the 8-12% range of our [cold call connect rate benchmarks](https://skipcall.io/en/blog/cold-call-connect-rate-benchmarks), and the same value as in [how many lines should your dialer run](https://skipcall.io/en/blog/how-many-lines-parallel-dialer) |
| Round with no conversation | 30 seconds | Dialing and ringing, same model |
| Conversation length | 3 minutes, notes included | Same model |
| Conversations per meeting | 10 | Deliberately conservative |
| Fully loaded rep cost | $6,000 a month, about $40 an hour | Same figure as in [how to reduce cost per meeting](https://skipcall.io/en/blog/reduce-cost-per-meeting-sdr); adjust to your market |
| Attempts per contact | 4 at most | A short sequence, cancelled lines included |
| License prices | Starter $70, Intermediate $140 a month | Skipcall’s public annual prices, [see pricing](https://skipcall.io/en/pricing) |

The model is the same one we used for line counts. One thing to know about it: it is **generous to one-at-a-time dialing**, because it counts no logging time between two numbers. In real life the gap between the two modes is often wider, which is one reason other articles, including [parallel dialer vs power dialer](https://skipcall.io/en/blog/parallel-dialer-vs-power-dialer), quote bigger multipliers. Here we’d rather run a cautious number.

## Step 1: how many hours do you really dial?

This is the number small teams overestimate the most. A founder doesn’t spend the day on the phone: they sell, hire and ship. A full-time rep on a three-person team also runs their own meetings, follow-ups and CRM updates. What counts is the hours spent actually dialing.

We use two profiles:

- **The founder who prospects**: one hour a day, four days a week, so **16 hours a month**.
- **The full-time rep**: two hours of dialing a day, 20 days a month, so **40 hours a month**.

If you don’t know how many hours you really dial, our [selling time calculator](https://skipcall.io/en/tools/selling-time-calculator) helps you tally them. Under two hours a week, the math below still comes out positive, but the habit never forms; more on that further down.

## Step 2: how many conversations per hour?

Here’s what the model gives at a 10% answer rate, for one rep over one hour of dialing.

| Mode | Conversations per hour | Numbers dialed per hour |
| - | - | - |
| One call at a time | 7.5 | 75 |
| 2 lines | 10.7 | 112 |
| 3 lines | 12.4 | 137 |
| 4 lines | 13.5 | 157 |

_Model: 10% human answer rate, 30 seconds per round with no conversation, 3 minutes per conversation. Same values as in our line count article._

Going from one call at a time to 4 lines multiplies conversations by **1.8**, but it also multiplies numbers dialed by **2.1**. Keep both figures in mind: the first drives the payback, the second sets the limit.

## Step 3: what happens to cost per meeting?

Cost per meeting is simple: everything prospecting costs in a month, divided by meetings booked. Applied to the full-time rep:

The extra $70 of license buys about 24 more meetings a month, under $3 per additional meeting. You can also read it the other way: to book the same 30 meetings, the rep only needs 22 hours of dialing instead of 40. The 18 freed-up hours can go to meetings, follow-ups or list building.

For the founder at 16 hours a month, salary math makes less sense; the right metric is time. To book **10 meetings a month**, they need 13.3 hours one call at a time, and **7.4 hours on 4 lines**. That’s close to 6 hours back every month, on a $70 Starter license that covers both modes: at 216 conversations a month, they stay well under the plan’s 400.

And for a team of three, a founder and two reps:

| Team of 3 | One call at a time | 4 lines |
| - | - | - |
| Dialing hours per month | 96 | 96 |
| Conversations per month | 720 | 1,293 |
| Meetings per month | 72 | 129 |
| Licenses per month | $210 (3 Starter) | $350 (1 Starter, 2 Intermediate) |
| Cost per meeting | $178 | $100 |

_Team cost: two reps at $6,000 and 16 founder hours valued at $40, so $12,640 a month, plus licenses._

To rerun this with your own numbers, our [cost per meeting calculator](https://skipcall.io/en/tools/cost-per-meeting) and [prospecting calculator](https://skipcall.io/en/tools/prospecting-calculator) follow the same logic.

## Step 4: when does the license pay for itself?

In our model, each hour on 4 lines produces as many conversations as 1.8 hours one call at a time. It saves **0.8 hour** of dialing.

In other words, the license is almost never the problem. Even a founder dialing two hours a week earns it back in time saved. If the math stopped there, the answer would always be yes. It doesn’t stop there.

## Step 5: the real ceiling is your list

A multi-line dialer uses up contacts about twice as fast. That’s the limit small teams discover after the fact.

Size your addressable market: how many companies fit your ICP, and how many reachable decision-makers in each. Divide by your monthly usage and you get your **months of list**. If the result is under three months, you’ll exhaust your market before you’ve learned how to talk to it.

In that case, you have three options:

- **Run fewer lines.** On 2 lines, the model gives 10.7 conversations per hour for 112 numbers dialed: 40% more conversations than one call at a time, with much lighter list usage.
- **Dial fewer hours** and put the time saved into building the list.
- **Stay one call at a time**, and make every conversation count.

Don’t forget cancelled lines either: on 4 lines, each conversation leaves up to three prospects with a missed call. In a small market, it’s always the same people seeing your number. Our article on [burned call lists](https://skipcall.io/en/blog/burned-prospect-list) covers that effect.

## When is a parallel dialer not worth it?

The math above comes out favorable in most cases. Here are the ones where it doesn’t, and where we’d tell you to skip it.

**A small market.** If your target fits in 200 or 300 accounts, a researched, personalized account-based approach pays more than raw throughput. The months-of-list rule settles it.

**Long cycles and researched calls.** When every call needs twenty minutes of account research, the bottleneck isn’t ring time, it’s prep. A multi-line dialer doesn’t change that.

**Strategic accounts.** An account that carries a big share of your annual target shouldn’t get a call cancelled mid-ring, or a rep who’s hearing the name for the first time. Call it one by one.

**An answer rate that’s already high.** Inbound leads, existing customers, contacts expecting your call: answer rates can top 20%. At that level the line rule caps you at 2 lines and the gain shrinks: in our model at 20%, you go from 10.9 to 13.7 conversations per hour, +25%. For inbound leads, call-back speed matters more, as our [speed to lead calculator](https://skipcall.io/en/tools/speed-to-lead-calculator) shows.

**Less than two hours of dialing a week.** The license still pays off on paper, but a tool you open once a week never becomes a routine. Block regular calling time first; the tool comes after.

**A pitch you haven’t found yet.** A founder still looking for their opener needs to think between conversations, not chain them. The first thirty to fifty conversations on a new offer go better one call at a time. Once the pitch is stable, adding lines multiplies what works.

**Inbound call handling.** If your priority is answering incoming calls, with a main line or call queues, an outbound dialer like Skipcall isn’t the right tool.

## Which plan fits a small team?

Skipcall plans differ mainly by the number of conversations included, with a conversation counted past 10 seconds. Prices below are per license per month, billed annually.

| Profile | Conversations per month in our model | Plan that fits |
| - | - | - |
| Founder, 1 h a day, 4 days a week | ≈ 216 | Starter, from $70 (400 conversations) |
| Rep, 2 h a day | ≈ 540 | Intermediate, from $140 (1,000 conversations) |
| Rep, 3 h a day or more | ≈ 810 and up | Intermediate, or Expert for unlimited conversations |

One license is enough to start, and each rep can be on their own plan. Details are on the [pricing page](https://skipcall.io/en/pricing). If you’re still torn between dialer types, our [which dialer quiz](https://skipcall.io/en/tools/which-dialer-quiz) asks the right questions in two minutes.

## What to remember

For a small team, the question isn’t whether a multi-line dialer pays off: at a few hours of dialing a month, it nearly always does. The question is **whether you have enough contacts to feed it** and **whether your pitch is ready to be multiplied**.

The math fits in four lines. Count your real dialing hours. Multiply by 7.5 conversations one call at a time, or 13.5 on 4 lines, at a 10% answer rate. Divide your monthly cost by the meetings booked. Then check how many months of list you have left at that pace. If it’s more than three months and your opener works, add lines. If not, start on 2 lines, or stay one call at a time while you build the list.

FAQ

## Frequently asked questions

**Is a parallel dialer worth it for a solo founder?**

Usually yes, as soon as they dial a few hours a month. In our model at a 10% answer rate, a 4-line dialer produces about 1.8 times as many conversations per hour as one call at a time. Booking 10 meetings a month takes about 7.4 hours of dialing instead of 13.3, close to 6 hours back every month, for a license from $70 per month billed annually.

**How many calling hours does it take for the license to pay for itself?**

In our scenario, each hour of parallel dialing saves about 0.8 hour of one-at-a-time dialing. With time valued at $40 an hour, a $70 monthly license pays for itself at 2.2 hours of dialing per month, and a $140 license at 4.4 hours. The license price is rarely what decides it.

**If not the price, what actually decides it?**

The size of your list. On 4 lines at a 10% answer rate, a rep dialing 40 hours a month places about 6,270 calls, close to 1,570 new contacts a month if each contact gets at most 4 attempts. If your total addressable market is a few hundred accounts, you'll run through it in weeks.

**When is a parallel dialer not worth it?**

When the list is small (niche market, account-based approach), when every call needs long research, when you're calling strategic accounts you can't risk, when the answer rate is already high (inbound leads, customers), when you dial less than two hours a week, or when you haven't found your pitch yet and every conversation is a learning exercise.

**Which Skipcall plan fits a small team?**

The parallel dialer is included from the Starter plan, from $70 per month per license billed annually, with 400 conversations a month. A founder dialing one hour a day, four days a week, produces about 216 in our model and stays within that plan. A rep dialing two hours a day goes past 500 conversations and fits the Intermediate plan, from $140 per month, with 1,000 conversations.

**Are the numbers in this article real measurements?**

No. They come from a model with explicit assumptions: a 10% human answer rate, 30 seconds per round without a conversation, 3 minutes per conversation including notes, 1 meeting per 10 conversations, and a $6,000 monthly fully loaded cost per rep. Swap in your own numbers with our cost per meeting calculator.

**Should you start one call at a time and switch to parallel later?**

It's often the best order for a founder: a few dozen conversations one call at a time to find the opener and the objections, then several lines once the pitch is stable. Skipcall's Starter plan includes both the power dialer and the parallel dialer, so you can switch depending on the list.
